Premenstrual syndrome effects over 70% to 90% of women before menopause in the US and less for women in Southeast Asia because of their difference in living style and social structure. It is defined as faulty function of the ovaries related to the women's menstrual cycle, it effects a women's physical and emotional state, and sometimes interferes with daily activities as a result of hormone fluctuation. The syndrome occurs one to two weeks before menstruation and then declines when the period starts. In this article, we will discuss how Chinese herbs Cuscuta (tu si zi) effects women with PMS.

Cuscuta is a genus of yellow, orange or red parasitic plants and belongs to the family Cuscutaceae. It have been used in traditional medicine in treating liver and kidney diseases.

1. Hepatoprotective
Cuscuta contains chemical agent which helps to prevent liver damage caused by either environment toxins or toxins accumulated in the liver resulting in improving the liver function in

2. Lignan
It also contains lignan, one of the member of phytoestrogen, which helps to inhibit the bad estrogen and raise the levels of good estrogen resulting in balancing the hormones between estrogen and progesterone thereby, reducing symptoms of premenstrual syndrome.

3. Flavonoid
Flavonoid is better known for it antioxidant properties in improve immune system fighting the growth of tumor and cancer. It also increases the immune system in fighting against the virus or bacteria re productive organ infection and inflammation.

4. Diuretics
Cuscuta also knows to improve kidney function in getting rid of the toxins in the body through urinary secretion resulting in lessening the risk of water retention and weight gain for some women with PMS.

5. Digestive system
It also helps to improve digestive absorption of vital vitamins and mineral by stopping diarrhea for some women before and after ovulation.
