Magnesium is a naturally occurring mineral while magnesium citrate is a form of the mineral that is readily absorbed by the body. It is an important element for our muscles and nerves so that they can function properly. It is also used as a chemical agent which is used as laxative for patients before any surgery or laparoscopy.

It has numerous beneficial effects for the human body. Magnesium citrate works on the intensities and helps to relive the waste easily by absorbing a lot of water. This water makes the stools more supple and easy to pass. This process is called osmosis. Water and magnesium citrate soften the stool and allows easy bowel movement. It can also treat rectal and colon problems. This is the reason it is an important ingredient in most laxatives. It is always better to take it on empty stomach, followed by a glass full of juice or water ( 8 ounce), so that the water absorbs the chemical thoroughly for better results, and also to avoid any complications.

The magnesium content in magnesium citrate helps fight depression and relaxes nerves and muscles. It also helps maintain the required RNA /DNA levels in our body. It helps women who have problems of PMS (pre menstrual syndrome) by working along with vitamin B6. It reduces the mood swings and anxiety that occur during this phase. It helps utilization of vitamin B6 and vitamin E in our body and assists tissue respiration.

In general, we have to consume about 300 to 400 grams of magnesium as part of our daily diet. We get this naturally from dry roasted almonds, dry roasted cashews, cooked Soya beans and cooked spinach. It is also available in potatoes, brown rice, baked beans, yogurt and bran flakes. If you feel you do not consume enough magnesium required for the normal functioning of your body, it is time to take additional supplements.
